In the age group of 15, Bruckner had her first leading character in the movie Blue Car (2002) in which she portrayed the role of a student at high school who is having an affair with her teacher played by David Strathairn. Roger Ebert wrote in his film review that Bruckner is able to handle the difficult story with total ease. Bruckner is nominated as the "Best Female Leading Actress" by Independent Spirit Award. She grew up with three siblings, with two sisters and a brother. Her mother tongue was Hungarian, and she regularly practised the language to stay proficient. Bruckner is a Californian in Hollywood born daughter of an Hungarian father and a Russian mother. Her maternal grandparents were German. In Hungary the parents of Bruckner first met and then immigrated to America in 1984, via a refugee settlement in Italy. There are two of her siblings as well as a younger brother.
